My Philosophy of Maths Education
As a qualified maths teacher with QTS and over 15 years of tutoring experience, I believe that students learn best when they are encouraged to think for themselves rather than simply being shown how to answer questions. My approach is heavily influenced by the Socratic questioning technique, where carefully chosen questions guide students towards discovering mathematical ideas and solutions independently. This develops deeper understanding, greater confidence, and the problem-solving skills needed for long-term success.
Building Understanding Through Questions
Rather than providing answers immediately, I use targeted questioning to help students explore different methods, identify patterns, and explain their reasoning. This approach helps students become active learners and develops the mathematical thinking required for success at KS3, GCSE and A-Level. Through guided discussion, students learn not only how to solve problems but also why mathematical methods work.
Positive Relationships and Confidence
I believe that a supportive learning environment is essential for progress. Every student receives regular positive encouragement and constructive feedback designed to build confidence and resilience. By developing a healthy rapport with students, I create lessons where learners feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and challenging themselves. Many students arrive believing they are "not good at maths"; my goal is to help them discover that they are capable of far more than they realise.
