What is taught in Year 1 Maths?

Year 1 Maths introduces children to the fundamental skills that form the foundation of future mathematical learning. Pupils begin by counting, reading and writing numbers, comparing quantities and developing an understanding of place value. Year 1 maths builds on the early number skills developed in Reception and helps children become more confident with counting, calculating and problem-solving. Students learn to count forwards and backwards, read and write numbers, and compare and order numbers up to 100. They also begin working with number bonds and simple addition and subtraction calculations.As the year progresses, children are introduced to multiplication and division through practical activities such as grouping and sharing. They learn to recognise common fractions including one-half and one-quarter and begin using mathematical language to describe parts of a whole. Year 1 maths also includes topics beyond number. Children learn to recognise and name common 2D and 3D shapes, compare and measure lengths, heights, weights and capacities, and tell the time to the nearest hour and half hour. They also develop an understanding of money by recognising coins and solving simple money problems.Throughout the year, students are encouraged to explain their thinking, spot patterns and apply their maths skills to everyday situations. These foundations are essential for future learning and prepare children for the more advanced concepts they will encounter in Year 2 maths.
