In Year 10, fractions are used in a wide range of GCSE maths topics, including simplifying, comparing, adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions. You should be confident finding a common denominator, converting between improper fractions and mixed numbers, and reducing answers to their simplest form. Fractions may also appear alongside decimals and percentages, so being able to convert between these forms is an important skill.
When working with more challenging fraction problems, you may need to apply the order of operations, solve problems involving fractions of amounts, or use fractions in ratio, probability and algebraic expressions. For multiplication, multiply the numerators and denominators, simplifying where possible. For division, multiply by the reciprocal of the second fraction. Always check whether your final answer can be simplified or written in a more appropriate form.
