Common Questions about Year 10 Probability

  1. What is the product rule for counting?

The product rule states that when one choice can be made in a certain number of ways and another choice can be made in a certain number of ways, the total number of combinations is found by multiplying the numbers of choices.
  2. How do I know whether repetition is allowed?

Read the question carefully. If an item, letter or digit can be selected more than once, repetition is allowed. If each item can only be used once, the number of available choices decreases after every selection.
  3. When should I add rather than multiply combinations?

Multiply when choices are made together, such as choosing one top and one pair of trousers. Add when counting separate alternatives, such as choosing either a two-item bundle or a three-item bundle.

Year 10 Probability Common Mistakes

  1. Common Mistake 1

Adding the numbers of choices when the product rule requires them to be multiplied.
  2. Common Mistake 2

Using the same number of choices at every stage when repetition is not allowed.
  3. Common Mistake 3

Counting arrangements more than once or missing possible combinations by listing them unsystematically.
