What is taught in Year 2 Maths?

Year 2 maths develops the skills learned in Year 1 and helps children become more confident with numbers, calculations and problem-solving. Students learn to read, write, compare and order numbers up to 100 and beyond, while improving their understanding of place value. They practise addition and subtraction using mental methods and written calculations, including solving problems involving one- and two-digit numbers. Children also begin learning multiplication and division facts, focusing on the 2, 5 and 10 times tables. They use grouping, sharing and arrays to understand how multiplication and division are connected. Fractions are explored in greater depth, with students recognising, finding and comparing simple fractions such as halves, quarters and thirds. In measurement, children learn to measure and compare lengths, mass, temperature and capacity using standard units. They also work with money, solving practical problems involving pounds and pence. Time becomes more advanced, with students learning to tell the time to the nearest five minutes and understand concepts such as minutes, hours, days and months. Year 2 maths also includes work on properties of 2D and 3D shapes, simple statistics using pictograms and tally charts, and reasoning activities that encourage children to explain their methods. These important skills provide a strong foundation for Key Stage 2 mathematics and future problem-solving.
