Common Questions about Year 7 Fractions

  1. 1. What is a fraction?

A fraction represents part of a whole or a part of a group. Fractions are written with a numerator above a denominator.
  2. 2. How do I find a fraction of an amount?

Divide the amount by the denominator and then multiply by the numerator.
  3. 3. Why do equivalent fractions have different numbers?

Equivalent fractions represent the same value even though the numerator and denominator are different. For example, 1/2 and 2/4 are equivalent fractions.

Year 7 Fractions Common Mistakes

  1. Common Mistake 1

Adding or subtracting the numerator and denominator instead of using the correct fraction method.
  2. Common Mistake 2

Forgetting to divide by the denominator before multiplying by the numerator when finding a fraction of an amount.
  3. Common Mistake 3

Thinking equivalent fractions have different values because they use different numbers.
